A Tribute to the Trinity

Three Types of Marketing Your Business Can’t Do Without

Most people are familiar with what we’ll call attraction tactics: billboards, ads, cold calling and so on. These mediums get your name out there, create a sense of familiarity, and make your business memorable. But on average, it takes seven times more money to get a new customer than keep an existing one. So, even though attraction tactics are extremely effective forms of advertising, there are actually two more types of tactics. And you need to use all three if you really want your business to grow.

To make your marketing magic, you can’t just focus on attracting new customers. You need to use a mix of:

Attraction tactics to get you noticed, develop brand recognition, and increase familiarity and memorability
(e.g. billboards, ads or cold calls)

Conversion tactics to get people to take action, call, sign up or buy
(e.g. direct mail, coupons, sweepstakes or special giveaways)

Retention tactics to keep you in touch with past customers to stay top of mind and ideally turn them into repeat customers and referral sources
(e.g. eNewsletters, thank-you cards or special events)

The bottom line is, you can’t just advertise and sit back hoping people will decide to call or come in. If you want to turbo-charge your business growth, you need to use a mix of attraction, conversion and retention marketing tactics. Once you employ these powerful three, your sales will soar.
