19 Going On 20...

Take a look at the 23 year old in the picture on the left. He was cocky. He just got laid off, perhaps fired. And he just started his own company--Design At Work. Why not? He worked right out of high school and is a published artist. He worked his way through college. At the age of 21, he managed the art department of an aerospace firm. Now at 23, he's the Art Director of an advertising agency. He's ready, without any money or clients, to start his own business.

That was me then, and I've come quite a long way. During Design At Work's first 10 years, I felt like I had to do everything myself. Even though I had a talented business partner, Mike Stovall, and many dedicated employees, I was a typical entrepreneurial micromanager. My dad had given me my personal motto of 'If it is to be, it is up to me.' I handled sales, creative, account management and accounting. Almost nothing was done without my approval. Boy, I really had a handle on everything and a stranglehold on my company's growth.

During the next nine years, the ownership of the company was back in my hands alone, but something changed. I started allowing other people in my company to make decisions, have their own ideas, make their own mistakes, manage clients without my interference and do things without my approval. I realized that there were some things I was not as good at as others. My ideas did not have to be the only ideas. Our company was growing! We had a team mentality. We had a new motto, 'In it to win it.' I had a team of business partners that focused on our clients, our company and ourselves.
I know now that I never really did anything on my own. It was always a team effort. But I do have to thank that 23-year-old version of me for being so naïve and thinking he could do it all. I also want to thank the 42-year-old version of me for never giving up. Success is not a moment in time, it is a continuous journey. I could never be where I am without my wife, family, friends, former business partners, clients, co-workers and Tricia Park.

Design At Work has embarked on its 20th year in business and we will celebrate with a big party on New Year's Eve in 2010. I hope to see you there. Design At Work is a team effort, thanks for being in it to win it!

- John Lowery, President
