Everybody’s Talkin’.

Starting an Online Blog: Marketing Your Business

A business can reap countless benefits from an online blog — marketing boosts, name recognition and improved search engine optimization (SEO) to name a few. And those that do decide to go the online blog marketing route, find themselves in good company. TechJury.net notes that more than 4.4 million blog posts went up DAILY in March of 2019, for instance, and that companies that do the right kind of blogging can see a serious return on their investment. So, what is it about the medium that makes it so appealing?

One facet of blogging that distinguishes it from traditional publishing methods is the opportunity for readers to connect with a business directly. Through a blog, readers are introduced to a specific topic a company is knowledgeable — and, ideally, passionate — about. When a business offers thoughts and insights regarding a particular issue, or helpful “news you can use” information, readers learn a bit about the business. At the same time, that business positions itself as an expert clients and potential clients can trust.

Here are a few helpful tips to get you started on an online blog.

Step 1: Lay the Groundwork

To get started with your blog, choose a blogging platform, domain name and hosting option. Numerous businesses have added the blog option on their websites to write about news within their industry and share news about their business. By having the blog option on your business website, you can speak directly to your clients — and continue adding fresh, informative content to your online home.

Step 2: Consider the Look and Feel

Design your blog with a simple theme and then modify it to fit your company’s brand with the right colors and font options. Remember, while your chosen platform might offer all sorts of bells and whistles, sometimes less is more. It’s OK to incorporate an image, video or hyperlink into a blog post, for instance, but you don’t want to go overboard. A blog with too much going on can begin to feel like an early 2000s Myspace page, and nobody has time for that.

Step 3: Keep the Content Coming

The most successful blogs are those that put out quality content on a regular basis. Make it a point to put posts up every week or two, and to write about topics your current and potential customers care about. Boost your posts’ likelihood of being seen by incorporating phrases people search for online — that’s the SEO element — and also pushing your posts out through social media and email marketing. (Having help from a dedicated copywriter can make a world of difference in keeping new ideas and content flowing.)
