Don’t Fear The Blank Canvas | What Every Marketer Should Know About Graphic Design
As a marketer, you already know about the vast collection of skills you need to be successful. The number of hats you wear on any given day can be dizzying, but one that proves to be most challenging for many is graphic design. If you’re from the world of journalism or copywriting, graphic design can feel overwhelming.
While becoming a Photoshop wizard isn’t easy, graphic design doesn’t have to be scary. You’ve seen hundreds of great designs over the course of your life, now you just have to apply what you’ve seen to your own creations. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind.
Understand what you can work with before you start designing.
Every company has different brand guidelines, and it’s important to know what those guidelines are before you put anything down on your blank canvas. Make sure you know what logos you can use, what taglines need to be involved, what colors are associated with your brand. Knowing what you can use, and more importantly what you should avoid, will save you headaches in the long run.
Get comfortable with the basics.
Before you get to work on a 40-layer epic, practice working with the fundamentals. Read up on color theory. Study the fonts you have available. Examine layouts that you like and breakdown what works for them. This shouldn’t be stressful; you’re not studying for a test, so keep things light and fun.
See what tools are available.
There are dozens of apps and computer programs out there with the goal of making design simple and quick. Spend some time researching what’s out there and reading reviews. Don’t think of an app that helps with color selection or typefaces as a crutch or cheating; they are tools to help you get things done and on to your next project.
